A black hole of mass 10⁸–10⁹ kg radiates its entire rest-mass energy as Hawking emission over years to decades at sustained power of order 10¹⁶–10¹⁷ W, making it the most mass-efficient energy converter permitted by known physics: effective conversion efficiency approaches unity, versus ~0.007 for fusion and ~0.001 for fission. We treat the micro black hole energy converter (MBHEC) not as science fiction but as an engineering specification implied by semiclassical gravity, and ask what the rulebook actually demands. We derive the operating parameter space from the Hawking temperature, luminosity, and lifetime relations; identify two distinct design points (a manufactured short-lived "battery" hole at ~6×10⁸ kg and a captured primordial "reactor" hole near the survival threshold ~5×10¹¹ kg); and specify the five required subsystems — formation, confinement, feeding, capture, and end-of-life management. Each subsystem is assessed against known physics with blockers explicitly flagged. The dominant blocker is formation: recent analysis of vacuum polarization and Schwinger pair production indicates that kugelblitz (light-collapse) formation is dissipated before horizon formation for any realistic photon source, leaving primordial black hole capture as the only physics-sound pathway — contingent on an unresolved observational question. The refueling problem is shown to be an Eddington-type prohibition-as-price: sustained feeding is not forbidden, but the required beam intensity against ~10¹⁷ W of outward flux onto an attometer-scale target exceeds any known mechanism by many orders of magnitude, which reclassifies design point A from "reactor" to "battery." A Claims Ledger separating theorems, conjectures, and open problems is appended, together with falsifiability conditions that would materially revise this assessment.
An essay. A thesis put forward by its author — an argument, specification, or design — and not a verified result.
1. Introduction: a prohibition read as a specification
The laws of thermodynamics are usually narrated as prohibitions: you cannot create energy, you cannot fully convert heat to work, you cannot reach absolute zero. Read as a permission structure, they say something different: mass is energy, and any process that converts one to the other is allowed provided you pay in entropy and satisfy the conservation ledger. Chemical combustion collects ~10⁻⁹ of a fuel's rest energy. Fission collects ~10⁻³. Fusion, ~7×10⁻³. Matter–antimatter annihilation collects 1.0, but the antimatter must first be manufactured at catastrophic energetic loss, so it is a storage medium, not a source.
There is exactly one known physical process that converts ordinary matter — any matter: rock, water, waste — to radiation with efficiency approaching unity, without requiring an exotic fuel to be manufactured first: Hawking evaporation of a black hole. Drop a kilogram into a micro black hole and, over the hole's lifetime, semiclassical gravity returns ~9×10¹⁶ J as radiation. The black hole is not a fuel; it is a catalyst for total mass-energy conversion, paid for once at formation.
This paper asks the question in the form this book asks all such questions: not "is this forbidden?" but "what is the specification that would satisfy the constraints?" We will find that the physics of the operating hole is on remarkably solid ground — the Hawking relations are theorems of quantum field theory in curved spacetime — while the engineering closes on exactly two subsystems: making (or finding) the hole, and feeding it. Both blockers are quantified rather than hand-waved, and both are assigned epistemic status in the Claims Ledger (§9).
The idea has a short but serious literature. Crane and Westmoreland (2009) analyzed black-hole-powered starships and identified the viable mass window. Page (1976) computed the emission spectra and species-dependent lifetimes that all quantitative work relies on. Recent work by Álvarez-Domínguez et al. (2024) closed — at the level of known QED — the most-cited formation pathway. This paper synthesizes those results into a single systems specification.
2. Physical basis
2.1 The three governing relations
For an uncharged, non-rotating (Schwarzschild) black hole of mass M, semiclassical gravity gives three closed-form relations. All three are theorems of quantum field theory on a fixed black hole background (the caveat — backreaction and the final Planck-scale burst — is deferred to §2.4).
Temperature (Hawking 1974):
= 8πGk B
M ℏc 3
≈1.227×10 23 K×( M 1 kg
)
Luminosity (photon channel only; Stefan–Boltzmann-like with graybody corrections):
𝜋
≈3.6×10 32 W×( M 1 kg
) 2
Lifetime (photon channel only):
- 𝑡
- 𝑒
- 𝑣
- ≈
- 5120
𝜋
≈ ℏc 4 5120πG 2 M 3
≈8.4×10 −17 s×( 1 kg M
) 3
The Schwarzschild radius sets the geometric scale of the machine's core:
= c 2 2GM
≈1.5×10 −27 m×( 1 kg M
)
Two structural facts drive the entire design space. First, luminosity scales as M⁻²: smaller holes are enormously brighter. Second, lifetime scales as M³: brighter holes die fast. The product of these scalings is the fundamental trade of the MBHEC — power versus endurance — and it cannot be engineered around; it can only be chosen by selecting M.
2.2 Species factors: what the hole actually emits
The photon-only formulas above understate the emission. A hole emits every particle species whose rest mass is below ~k_BT_H. Page's numerical work established the pattern:
- M ≳ 10¹² kg (T ≲ 10¹¹ K, k_BT ≲ 10 MeV): photons, gravitons, and neutrinos only. Power enhancement over photon-only ≈ ×2–3.
- M ~ 10¹¹ kg (k_BT ~ 20–100 MeV): electrons and positrons join; ×~4–6.
- M ~ 10⁸–10⁹ kg (k_BT ~ 10–100 GeV): the full Standard Model — quarks and gluons (which hadronize into showers), muons, taus, W/Z, Higgs. Power enhancement ×~10²; lifetime correspondingly shortened by the same factor.
The species inventory matters twice over: it sets the true power and lifetime, and it sets the capture problem (§5.4), because a fixed and substantial fraction of the emission leaves as neutrinos and gravitons that no known material can absorb.
Ledger status: the emission of all kinematically available species is a theorem-level consequence of the Hawking calculation; the precise graybody-corrected fractions are numerical results (Page 1976; MacGibbon & Webber 1990 for hadronization), robust but model-dependent at the tens-of-percent level.
2.3 The two design points
Running the relations across the mass axis produces a narrow band of interest, bounded below by lifetime (too small → the hole is a bomb, not a power plant) and above by luminosity (too large → the hole is a heater, not a power plant).
Design point A — the manufactured battery (M ≈ 6×10⁸ kg). This is the Crane–Westmoreland operating point.
Parameter Value Mass 6×10⁸ kg (the mass of ~two Nimitz-class carriers) Horizon radius ~0.9 attometer (10⁻¹⁸ m — smaller than a proton by 10³) Temperature ~2×10¹⁴ K (k_BT ≈ 17 GeV — LHC-scale) Power (all species) ~10¹⁶–10¹⁷ W Lifetime years to decades Total energy yield Mc² ≈ 5.4×10²⁵ J ≈ 100× annual world primary energy consumption
At 10¹⁷ W this single object out-powers human civilization by a factor of several thousand, continuously, for years. It cannot be turned off, throttled, or refueled (§5.3) — hence "battery."
Design point B — the captured primordial reactor (M ≈ 5×10¹¹ kg). Holes lighter than a critical mass M* ≈ 5×10¹¹ kg formed in the early universe have already evaporated by today; M* is therefore the minimum surviving primordial black hole (PBH) mass, and a hole found at slightly above M* is naturally tuned to the interesting regime.
Parameter Value Mass ~5×10¹¹ kg (a modest asteroid) Horizon radius ~0.7 femtometer (proton-scale) Temperature ~2.5×10¹¹ K (k_BT ≈ 20 MeV) Power (all species) ~1–10 GW Remaining lifetime 10⁸–10⁹ years Neutrino/graviton loss fraction tens of percent
A gigawatt-class source with a lifetime exceeding the remaining habitable lifetime of any civilization that captures it: not a battery but a heritable reactor. Its blocker is not physics but existence — whether PBHs at this mass actually populate the solar neighborhood (§5.1).
2.4 What is theorem and what is not
Three honesty notes before proceeding, because the entire architecture rests on them:
- Hawking radiation itself has never been directly observed. Analog-gravity experiments (Steinhauer's BEC horizons, 2016–2021) confirm the kinematic mechanism — thermal pair emission at an effective horizon — in fluid systems, which is strong but indirect support. The gravitational case is a prediction of semiclassical gravity, not a measured fact. We ledger it as theorem-within-framework: if quantum field theory in curved spacetime is right in its domain of manifest validity, the radiation follows.
- The final burst is outside the framework. The last ~10⁴ kg evaporate in the final second at Planck-approaching temperatures where semiclassical gravity self-destructs. The end-of-life behavior (§5.5) carries genuine theoretical uncertainty — remnants, information release profile, burst spectrum.
- Unitarity and the no-deletion principle. The modern consensus (supported by the AdS/CFT-derived Page-curve results of 2019–2020) is that evaporation is unitary: the information of everything fed into the hole is relocated into correlations in the outgoing radiation, not deleted. The MBHEC is thus the ultimate incinerator in the thermodynamic sense and not an eraser in the information-theoretic sense — a distinction this book relies on elsewhere and which we ledger as conjecture with strong theoretical support (the Page-curve derivations are firmest in AdS; the flat-space and de Sitter cases remain open).
3. Systems specification
An MBHEC decomposes into five subsystems. For each we state the requirement, the governing physics, the current readiness tier (buildable now / physics-sound but unbuilt / speculative / blocked), and the blocker if any.
3.1 (S1) Formation or acquisition
Requirement: deliver one black hole of the chosen design mass to the plant site.
Pathway 1 — Kugelblitz (light collapse). BLOCKED at the level of known QED. Concentrate energy E = Mc² into a region smaller than the corresponding r_s and general relativity guarantees horizon formation (the hoop conjecture, theorem-adjacent; proven in spherical symmetry). For design point A this means 5.4×10²⁵ J — the Sun's total output for ~0.14 seconds — converging into ~10⁻¹⁸ m within ~10⁻²⁶ s. The classical GR side permits this. The quantum vacuum does not: Álvarez-Domínguez et al. (2024) showed that at the field strengths required, Schwinger pair production and vacuum polarization dissipate the electromagnetic energy into charged particle showers before the horizon can form, for any photon source weaker than ~10⁵⁰ W — a figure with no conceivable engineering pathway. The kugelblitz is not forbidden by GR; it is forbidden by the QED vacuum's refusal to stay transparent. Ledger: blocked (theorem-level within QED); the prohibition is a real prohibition, not a price.
Pathway 2 — Particle collision. BLOCKED at accessible energies unless large extra dimensions exist. Colliding particles at center-of-mass energy above the Planck scale (~10¹⁹ GeV) forms micro holes; the LHC reaches 10⁴ GeV. Low-scale-gravity scenarios (large extra dimensions, ADD/RS) would lower the threshold, but LHC null results have pushed those models to the margins. Even on success, collision-formed holes are Planck-mass objects that evaporate in 10⁻⁴² s: seeds that cannot be grown faster than they die. Ledger: speculative; doubly blocked (formation energy + growth race).
Pathway 3 — Primordial capture. PHYSICS-SOUND; OBSERVATIONALLY OPEN. Density fluctuations in the first second after the Big Bang may have collapsed into PBHs across a vast mass range. Holes near M* ≈ 5×10¹¹ kg would today be ~GW-scale gamma sources — in principle detectable by their emission (a point-source with a distinctive hard spectrum and rising luminosity). Diffuse gamma-ray background measurements constrain the cosmic density of such holes to a small fraction of dark matter, but constrain-not-forbid: individual specimens in the galaxy, even the solar neighborhood, remain fully consistent with data. Capture then reduces to (hard but non-exotic) astrodynamics: a gravitational tug performed on an object that cannot be pushed, only pulled — a decades-scale mission using a massive tug spacecraft, of the same family as asteroid-deflection gravity tractors, scaled up. Ledger: the existence question is an open problem; the capture mission is physics-sound but unbuilt.
Assessment: S1 is the load-bearing blocker of the entire architecture. Design point A currently has no open formation pathway. Design point B has exactly one, gated on an observational discovery no one can schedule.
3.2 (S2) Confinement and stationkeeping
Requirement: hold the hole at a fixed location relative to the capture structure.
The obvious tools fail for instructive reasons. Electromagnetic confinement requires the hole to carry charge, but a hole hot enough to be useful discharges itself almost instantly via Schwinger emission of charged pairs — the same vacuum process that blocks the kugelblitz here acts as a self-neutralization mechanism. (A cold, large hole can hold charge; our design points cannot.) Ledger: theorem-level within QED.
What remains is gravity and momentum flux, and they suffice:
- Free-fall architecture: the hole orbits the Sun (or a planet); the converter structure formation-flies around it, never touching, correcting its own orbit with thrusters. The hole needs no stationkeeping because nothing perturbs it — its interaction cross-section with ordinary matter is attometers wide.
- Radiation anchoring (design point A only): at 10¹⁷ W the hole's own emission exerts enormous pressure on any asymmetric absorber; Crane–Westmoreland's starship uses precisely this, with the hole gravitationally dragged along by the ship it pushes. The feedback loop (ship pushed by hole; hole pulled by ship) is self-centering for correct geometry.
Ledger: physics-sound but unbuilt. No blocker. Note the permission-structure inversion: the hole's "untouchability" first appears as a prohibition (you cannot grab it) and resolves into a specification (you must fly in formation with it).
3.3 (S3) Feeding — the Eddington wall
Requirement (if "reactor" operation is desired): deliver mass at dM/dt = P/c² against the outgoing radiation flux.
For design point A: P/c² ≈ 1–2 kg/s. Two kilograms per second sounds trivial until the geometry and the counter-flux are computed:
- Target size: effective capture radius for relativistic infall is (3√3/2)·r_s ≈ 2.6 r_s ≈ 2×10⁻¹⁸ m. Capture cross-section ~10⁻³⁵ m².
- Counter-flux: at 1 m from the hole the outward intensity is P/4πr² ≈ 10¹⁶ W/m² — radiation pressure ~3×10⁷ Pa of GeV-scale gamma rays and hadronic shower products. Any macroscopic pellet is ablated to plasma far outside the capture radius; the plasma is then blown outward.
- Beam option: a particle beam can in principle be driven inward, but the beam must be focused toward an attometer-scale spot with luminosity (in the collider sense) exceeding anything conceivable by ~20 orders of magnitude; nearly all beam mass misses and is lost.
This is the Eddington limit's vicious little sibling: astrophysical holes self-limit their accretion at the Eddington luminosity, and a design-point-A hole runs at ~10⁹ × its own Eddington luminosity. The specification is not forbidden — a sufficiently intense, sufficiently collimated mass flow satisfies conservation laws — but the price is paid in beam physics that exceeds known mechanisms by such margins that we classify it honestly: open problem, no known solution concept; treat design point A as a non-refuelable battery.
Design point B softens the wall by eight orders of magnitude (GW not 10¹⁷ W; femtometer not attometer target) but the capture cross-section remains nuclear-scale; feeding remains impractical, and — critically — unnecessary, since the hole outlives its owners by 10⁸ years regardless. The correct design response to the feeding blocker is to not need it.
3.4 (S4) Energy capture
Requirement: intercept the emission and convert to useful work.
The emission at both design points is dominated by hard gamma rays and (at point A) hadronic showers from quark/gluon emission, plus an irreducible loss channel:
- Absorbable fraction (~60–80%): photons and charged shower products thermalize in meters of dense absorber. The converter is therefore architecturally boring in the best way: a thick spherical shell (tungsten, flowing lithium, or simply rock) around the hole, run as a heat engine at whatever temperature the shell materials tolerate, with Carnot-limited but conventional thermodynamics downstream. A 10-GW point-B core with a ~1000 K shell is, from the turbine's point of view, indistinguishable from a fission plant. Point A's 10¹⁷ W requires a shell radius of tens of kilometers merely to bring wall loading down to survivable MW/m² levels — a megastructure, but one made of ordinary matter and ordinary heat exchange. Physics-sound but unbuilt.
- Irreducible loss (~20–40%): neutrinos and gravitons pass through any shell of any thickness. This is a theorem-level inefficiency written into the species inventory. It cannot be engineered away; it can only be budgeted. (A civilization that could absorb the neutrino channel would command interaction cross-sections we have no physics for — ledger: speculative, flagged as the kind of "hidden physics" question the embodied-discovery chapters take up.)
3.5 (S5) End-of-life management
Requirement: survive the terminal phase.
Evaporation is a runaway: as M falls, P rises as M⁻². The final day of a design-point-A hole releases more energy than the preceding year; the final second releases ~10⁵ kg × c² ≈ 10¹⁹ J or more in an ascending shriek of increasingly exotic radiation, terminating in a Planck-regime event our theories cannot describe. The specification writes itself: months before end-of-life, the converter structure is evacuated and withdrawn to light-second range, and the terminal burst is treated as (a) a disposal problem with a known upper bound — the hole cannot release more than its remaining Mc², a hard conservation theorem that makes this failure mode strictly bounded, unlike a fission meltdown's chemistry-dependent mess — and (b) the single most valuable quantum-gravity experiment ever conducted, instrumented accordingly.
Safety note against the popular fear: a micro hole cannot "eat the Earth." Its accretion cross-section is subatomic and its outward luminosity exceeds any plausible accretion power by orders of magnitude; the Giddings–Mangano analysis of collider-hole scenarios established the general point quantitatively. At these masses the hazard is the radiation, which is bounded, directional-izable, and distance-mitigated — an ordinary hazard class, extraordinarily scaled.
4. Energy accounting
The MBHEC's claim to significance is a single ratio. Define η as (useful energy out) / (rest-mass energy of all inputs including formation cost).
Point B (captured PBH): formation cost ≈ one capture mission (~10¹⁴ J of propellant-class energy, generously). Yield ≈ 0.6–0.8 × Mc² ≈ 3×10²⁸ J over its (partial, owner-relevant) lifetime — but even counting only 10⁴ years of GW output: ~3×10²⁰ J. η against mission cost: ~10⁶. Against the hole's own rest mass (which the owners never paid for): the universe's gift.
Point A (manufactured): here the accounting inverts and must be stated honestly. The formation energy is ≥ Mc² before inefficiencies; with any real formation process (were one to exist), η < 1 strictly. A manufactured hole is therefore — like antimatter — a storage and logistics technology, not a source: it buys unmatched energy density (the entire output of civilization for a century, in an object with the footprint of a proton) and pays for it in up-front energy and in the M³ tyranny of the lifetime clock. The correct comparison class is not "power plant" but "the ultimate battery and the ultimate starship drive" — which is exactly where Crane and Westmoreland filed it.
5. What would change this assessment (falsifiability conditions)
Consistent with this book's practice, we list the observations or results that would move claims across ledger categories:
- Detection of a PBH with M ~ 10¹¹–10¹² kg (point-source hard-gamma signature with the predicted rising spectrum; or microlensing/dynamical detection at larger masses) → moves S1-Pathway-3 from open problem to engineering program; design point B becomes the most important object in the solar system.
- Continued null results in all PBH windows as gamma-ray and microlensing surveys deepen → design point B degrades toward speculative; the MBHEC as a whole loses its only open formation pathway.
- A loophole in the Schwinger-dissipation argument (e.g., formation via neutrino or graviton beams, which do not pair-produce electromagnetically) → reopens the kugelblitz at conjecture level. (Flagged: neutrino-beam luminosities required are themselves beyond any known mechanism; this is a loophole in the proof, not yet a pathway.)
- Direct or analog confirmation/refutation of Hawking radiation's spectral details — continued analog-horizon results, or (decisively) observation of a terminal PBH burst by gamma-ray observatories → hardens or breaks the theorem-within-framework status of §2.1.
- Resolution of the final-burst regime by a quantum gravity framework with independent support → converts S5's uncertainty into specification.
Each of these is a real experimental or observational program, not a rhetorical gesture; several (PBH burst searches by HAWC and Fermi; analog horizons) are running now.
6. Conclusion
Read as prohibition, the micro black hole says: you cannot make me (the vacuum dissipates your light), you cannot feed me (my own fire repels all fuel), you cannot touch me, and I will die on a schedule set by M³. Read as permission structure, the same physics says: total mass-energy conversion is allowed — the only process in the known universe that offers it for ordinary matter — and the specification is: find one already made (the early universe may have paid your formation cost 13.8 billion years ago), fly in formation with it, wrap it in ordinary matter, and accept the neutrino tithe. Every "impossible" resolved into a price; exactly one price (formation from scratch) resolved into a genuine theorem-level prohibition; and the remaining open problem is not "can it work?" but "did the universe leave any lying around?" — a question with a search program attached.
The cartoon closes; the real problem stays open.

Simulation
Results
1. What was simulated One self-contained Python script that models the full life of a micro black hole as an energy converter, in four coupled pieces: (a) Species-resolved Hawking evaporation. The mass-loss law dM/dt = −A·f(M)/M², where A is the exact photon-only Schwarzschild rate and f(M) is the species enhancement factor: a sum over 14 entries (photon, graviton, 3 neutrino flavors, e/μ/τ, u-d-s/c/b/t quarks, gluons, W/Z/Higgs). Each species contributes (degrees of freedom) × (per-dof spin weight) × (thermal activation exp(−m/kT_H)). Weights are normalized to Page's 1976 cold-hole ratios (81% ν / 17% γ / 2% graviton). The history M(t), P(t) is computed by exact quadrature in mass space — integrating t(M) = ∫ M²/(A·f) dM on a descending log grid — which avoids stiff-ODE blowup at the terminal runaway entirely. (b) Final-state channel budget. Primary emission is mapped to what a thick ordinary-matter shell can actually absorb, via a fixed branching matrix: photons and e± fully absorbable; μ/τ partially (decay-in-flight ν losses); hadronic showers 55% (π⁰→γγ recovered, π±→μν chains mostly lost); ν and gravitons 0%. Output: the absorbable fraction as a function of hole mass — the number that sets converter efficiency. (c) The feeding wall. For a given design mass: required inward mass-flux density = (P/c²) / (capture cross-section), with capture radius (3√3/2)·r_s for relativistic infall. Compared against known delivery mechanisms (NIF peak focus, LHC beam, solar-surface flux) in mass-equivalent units. This produces the 26-orders (Point A) / 13-orders (Point B) gap figures. (d) Acceptance-test suite with failure-propagation knobs. Seven pre-registered tests (T1–T7) run at baseline and under two deliberate corruption knobs: deletion (ε): removes a fraction of emitted energy from the ledger without it appearing in any channel — a unitarity/conservation violation. Breaks T1+T5 as a pair. qcd_shift (δ): multiplies hadronic-sector mass thresholds by (1+δ) — a wrong species turn-on scale. Breaks T3+T7 as a pair. The point of the knobs is diagnosability: distinct physical errors produce distinct, non-overlapping failure signatures. What is exact vs. toy (this matters for how far to trust each output): Exact: the Schwarzschild T/P/t/r_s relations; energy bookkeeping; the quadrature. Toy, ±20–50%: per-dof emissivity weights (Page-inspired, not graybody-integrated), the smooth exp(−m/kT) activation (real turn-on is sharper), the QCD scale placed at 0.3 GeV, the branching matrix. Robust outputs: scalings, orders of magnitude, M*, the shape of every curve. Not to be quoted to better than a factor ~2: absolute powers at hot design points, exact loss fractions. 2. Key outputs of the reference run Quantity Point A (6×10⁸ kg) Point B (5×10¹¹ kg) kT 17.6 GeV 21 MeV f (vs photon-only) 68.6 9.2 Power 6.8×10¹⁶ W 13 GW Lifetime 8.3 yr 3.6×10¹⁰ yr Absorbable 0.55 0.46 Emergent validation: survival threshold M* = 3.7×10¹¹ kg (literature ~5×10¹¹, nothing fitted). Emergent robustness: M* moves <1% under both corruption knobs (cube-root insensitivity) — so burst spectra, not survival statistics, discriminate emission models. 3. How to run Dependencies: Python 3.9+, numpy, matplotlib (uses the Agg backend; no display needed). No scipy, no network. bash pip install numpy matplotlib python3 mbhec_sim.py Runtime: ~30–60 s (dominated by the M* bisection inside the test suite, which runs three times). Outputs: stdout: headline numbers for both design points, M*, and the PASS/FAIL matrix for all three scenarios (baseline / ε=0.10 / QCD ×101). figs/fig1_design_space.png — P(M) and lifetime(M), design points, blocked region, M*. figs/fig2_pointA_history.png — mass drawdown, cumulative delivery, terminal runaway vs log time-remaining. figs/fig3_channel_budget.png — stacked final-state fractions vs M with the absorbable-fraction line. figs/fig4_feeding_wall.png — required feed flux vs known mechanisms, both design points. figs/fig5_acceptance.png — PASS/FAIL matrix + ε-sweep failure propagation + M* robustness. Edit the output directory at the top of __main__ (out = "/home/claude/figs") for your environment. 4. How to use / modify Different design point: every headline function takes M in kg directly — f_total(M), channel_fractions(M), absorbable_fraction(M), evolve(M0), feeding_wall(M). To scan a new mass, no code changes needed beyond calling them. Interrogate a corruption scenario: run_tests(deletion=0.05) or run_tests(qcd_shift=30) returns the dict of test outcomes plus the evaporation history; use it to find where each test's tolerance actually sits. Change the physics honestly: the three places the toy assumptions live, each a single obvious structure: SPECIES table — masses, dof, per-dof weights, channel labels; ABSORBABLE dict — the branching matrix; the activation function inside species_powers — swap exp(−m/kT) for a sharper turn-on if you want to test sensitivity. If you change any of these, rerun the suite: T6 (M* vs literature) and T3 (QCD break amplitude) are the tests that will tell you whether the change kept the model anchored. Reproducibility: fully deterministic — no RNG anywhere in the current version (the corruption knobs are deterministic parameter shifts, not noise). 5. Reading the acceptance matrix All green at baseline = the model is internally consistent and externally anchored (T6). T1/T5 red together, rest green → conservation-sector error (an ε-class bug or edit). T3/T7 red together, rest green → species-sector error (a δ-class bug or edit); note conservation stays green, i.e. the model can be silently wrong about power forecasts while perfectly conserving energy — the specific failure mode the suite was designed to expose. T6 red → the change moved the mass anchor; whatever you edited touched the massless sector or the quadrature itself. Given M*'s demonstrated robustness, treat a T6 failure as a bug before treating it as physics.
